There are a number of variants to poker, but all involve a full deck of cards being dealt in a round and then the players placing bets on a range of combinations including one pair, two pairs, three of a kind and a straight or four of a kind (royal flush). According to Green and Cowell, the earliest known form of poker was a game called Primero, which evolved into the more common game of brag, which became popular as a gentleman\u2019s card game around the time of the American Revolutionary War and is still played today.<\/p>\n
Unlike many other card games, where the top hand can be tied in another suit, in poker, the highest hand wins the pot, and to do that, players must have a complete five-card hand.
